CAMPAIGNING FOR OFFICE
Campaigning is a process used to allow other citizens to
know your name, the office you are running for, and the
reasons you are running for that office. Citizens take part
in campaigning by making posters, creating handouts with
their name, and giving speeches to get the attention of the
other citizens.
Develop some campaign ideas prior to your arrival at Girls
State. Keep in mind that you will have limited time to
prepare campaign materials. Keep your ideas simple. Name
recognition is key.
CAMPAIGN RULES
Bring your supplies for making campaign material with you
to Girls State. No campaign materials can be purchased or
ordered through the Girls State Store.
All campaign materials must be made and assembled after
arrival at Girls State. Campaign materials prepared prior
to arriving at Girls State are not allowed. This is done on
behalf of good sportsmanship, thus giving each citizen an
equal opportunity.
No pre-printed, computer generated, or copied campaign
materials are permitted. No photographs are allowed on
campaign materials.
Posters or other campaign material are not to be displayed
or circulated prior to filing for office.
Plan your campaign materials according to the office you
are seeking. If you plan to run for a state office, you
will be campaigning on all twelve (12) floors. If you run
for a county office, you will campaign on six (6) floors.
If you run for a city office, you will campaign on your
floor only.
Campaign materials must be hung with tape provided by the
University of Nebraska. Your counselors will have tape
available on your floor. Out of courtesy to those
candidates who are still campaigning, please remove your
campaign materials following your election.
No citizen should campaign for a Girls State office by
letter, email, text message, Facebook or MySpace posts, or
other means before the Girls State session begins.
Girls State staff will remove and discard any inappropriate
campaign materials.
